Cornerstone Care began 40 years ago as a nonprofit network of community health centers serving southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. The mission is to improve the health of our patients and of the residents of our communities, with a special concern for the underserved. Cornerstone provides a broad range of primary healthcare, which is available to everyone in the community regardless of ability to pay, insurance status, economic status, or other personal characteristics. The organization works to improve access to quality healthcare for persons and populations who otherwise may face one or more barriers, such as lack of insurance, awareness, transportation, providers, or personal resources.
One of Cornerstone's mobile dentistry successes is through a little, four-year-old boy, who was anxious about his first dental exam. The boy was extremely shy around new people and did not like enclosed spaces, which made his teachers were nervous. The dentist was able to calmly talk the youngster through exactly what he was going to do, and when he was going to do it. Everyone was shocked how well the appointment went! And, after the dentist was finished, the four-year-old went up and gave him a big hug! The Smile for Life program partners with Waynesburg University and the Greene County Career & Technology Center to bring oral health care curriculum to all the elementary and Head Start classrooms in Greene County. Cornerstone's Mobile Dental program goes to partnering school districts with the mobile unit and provides services including: dental exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatment, and sealants, if applicable. Restorative care is scheduled at a local office or at the student's regular dentist. Every school district in Greene County is enrolled in one or both of the programs. There is no charge for participation. An important portion of Cornerstone's outreach services includes continual contact with the local schools, whether that be seeing students on the mobile dental unit or teaching the oral health curriculum in their classrooms. The Smile for Life school-based program teaches students the importance of preventative dental care and how to treat their mouths throughout childhood. The organization also provides water bottles filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss, to every student in our community, ensuring they are equipped to care for their oral health. Cornerstone is currently looking for volunteers to help teach this curriculum; interested parties only need their clearances and some time to spare.
