The mission of DVSSP is to increase awareness of domestic violence and its effect on the community, to empower those victimized by providing advocacy and safe and effective services, and to work for social change designed to eliminate domestic violence. Domestic violence occurs within all racial, economic, education, and religious backgrounds. It can happen to ANYONE by ANYONE! Domestic violence is about power and control. Often abuse does not start until the relationship has progressed, making it more difficult to walk away. All partners in the relationship have the right to be treated with respect, to make his or her own choices, to live without fear, and to be less than perfect because…. love shouldn’t hurt!
All DVSSP services are free and confidential. Some of these services include: 24-hour hotline, safe housing, support groups, empowerment counseling, prevention education programs, and legal advocacy. What you’re about to read is a written testimonial from a student who participated in the teen dating violence program: “I learned a lot in this session. I learned about what emotional and physical abuse is and that they aren’t the same. I also learned that it is okay to have feelings, or go talk to someone about your problems. I learned a lot of ways you can calm down or how you know that you’re mad. I also learned how in order to have a healthy relationship you have to communicate with one another about how you feel. I want to say..thank you so much for this experience. I learned a lot that I never knew.” Prevention programs that are offered by Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania go beyond education and information. If we truly want to make our communities safer, we must get to the root causes of violence and ensure that every child has a strong foundation of social and emotional competency. To schedule a program for your classroom or community group, contact the Prevention Education Department at (724) 223-5477 or by emailing edutrain@peacefromdv.org. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Each year, DVSSP calls on the community to wear orange on Wear Orange for Love Day. This year, Wear Orange for Love Day is observed on February 11th. On February 11th, wear orange, snap a photo, and share it on social media using #DVSSP.
