Growing Up Greene is committed to protecting Greene County’s most important resource: its children. Our innovative child-welfare programming, expanding on time-tested, volunteer-led advocacy, provides real and positive results to the children and families we serve. We strive to reduce the impact and severity of childhood traumas, leading to healthier and happier local communities. Growing Up Greene was born from the need for greater child-centered charitable work in Greene County. Our volunteer Child Advocates, board members, and staff are dedicated to serving children and families inside and outside of the child welfare system, while maintaining the confidentiality of those same children and families.
Growing Up Greene's star employee sleeps more than others, accepts treats as compensation, and is always ready to spend time with a child who needs her help. COALBIE has been on the job since last December, and her main focus is the comfort of children in all stages of the child welfare process. She helps kids stay busy during court hearings, co wrote a book for foster kids to help them better understand their changing world, and regularly visits the CYS offices to provide comfort to anyone in need. "COALBIE has worked hard to become a valued member of the child welfare team, and the implementation of the Pup Program has added a component to that system that other areas do not have," said Keshia Weaver, Growing Up Greene's Board Vice President. In addition to its Child-Victim Therapy Dog, Growing Up Greene's programming also includes volunteer Child Advocates for foster children, the Emergency Overnight Housing Space, the Children's Winter Gear Distribution, Foster Care Comfort Packs and Pillows, an emergency clothing/shoe locker, and the Kids Corner meeting area. While a smaller county population generally means a lack of available resources, Growing Up Greene is committed to working with its community partners to provide the necessary and trauma-reducing services that the children of Greene County deserve. In conjunction with Waynesburg's Christmas on High Street, the 5th annual Children's Winter Gear Distribution will be held on November 30th at the Growing Up Greene office. Over 800 kids have been outfitted in coats, boots, hoodies, pajamas, and more since 2020, and Growing Up Greene is prepared to outfit another 500 children before the end of this year. No RSVPs or financial information is needed to attend, so please help us spread the word to all Greene County families in need. As the returning sponsor of this event, Iron Senergy has challenged Greene County with a $10,000 promise. Every dollar donated before November 30th will be matched and will help Growing Up Greene's 2025 programming. |
