2nd Sam 9 is a faith based adult day program for individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities.  We provide safe, enriching day activities in a Christ-centered environment that will help them reach their fullest social, emotional, and vocational potential.  We do this through daily activities including social time/social skills development, life skills training, pre-vocational activities, music, crafts, Bible lessons, prayer, exercise, and community outings.

2nd Sam 9 is a Christ-centered environment and is completely free of charge to the participants and we do not receive government funding.  We operate on donations from some very generous members of the community, churches and from organizations such as the United Way.  We currently operate three days per week (Mon, Wed and Thurs 9:00 am-3:00 pm) but, we would like to eventually conduct the program five days per week to accommodate the caregivers’ work schedules.

We have seen many successes over the past six years that 2nd Sam 9 has been in operation.  And we are so grateful for the blessing of a matching grant from the Greene County Community Hospital Foundation that provided for half of the cost of a van if we were able to raise the other half.  As usual, our donors provided generously and we were able to purchase a wonderful van that is used for outings to take our clients on field trips to the zoo, the Lippencott Alpaca Farm, the Greene County Museum and for service opportunities like helping distribute food at the local food bank.  The clients love getting out into the community and serving the Lord with gladness!

This year has been a particularly exciting year for us as we were blessed to purchase a nice piece of property near our current location.  Presently, we are located in West Waynesburg at an older church which has served us well over the years but is too small to accommodate all the clients and caregivers that attend on a regular basis.  We currently have a waiting list of clients who would like to attend but our building is just too small.  We have contracted with a builder and hope to have the new facility ready to move in 2020.  The clients are excited that the new building will be designed with their special needs in mind and those on the waiting list will be thrilled as well!  Another recent blessing is that we received another grant from the Women of SWPA to purchase a powerchair.  It was also a matching grant requiring us to fund the other half of the purchase and through generous donations.  The powerchair will be used during outings and walking in the community when the clients exercise.  Some of the clients have difficulty walking and the chair will be used so that they are able to participate with the rest of the group.

2nd Sam 9 relies heavily on volunteers.  We currently only have one part time employee.  Over the years, we have been blessed with numerous volunteers from Waynesburg University but when they are on break, there is a big need.  Many of the clients have caregivers which attend the program with them.  The clients who do not require a caregiver still appreciate someone to come along side of them and help with the craft or simply encourage them as they work on a project or play a game. We have found in all cases that the volunteers receive as much of a blessing in helping as the clients receive! We have even had some church groups and youth organizations prepare craft kits for the clients to use at the program.  So, not all volunteer activity requires the person to be on-site.  And, we have a very special pen pal program going which brings so much joy!
