Eva K. Bowlby Public Library
The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library is located in the heart of Waynesburg, housed in a beautiful mansion that was bequeathed to the community in 1946 to house the Children's Library. Service expanded in 1967 to include an adult collection and the name was changed to that of its benefactress, Eva.
In 2019, the Bowlby Library continues to be a focal point for the community. County residents and university students may apply for a FREE library card, which gives them admission to over 62,000 items in their collection. The three county WAGGIN card gives access to 19 other libraries as well as OverDrive, an online compilation of eBooks and several databases. The library also offers a bank of computers available to use for email, research and a variety of alternative options as well as Wi-Fi for those using their own devices.
The Children's Department is always bustling, offering story hours in the spring, summer and fall, as well as a lively summer reading program. The 2019 theme is "A Universe of Stories" and will be available for children ages 2-13, and will also include a Tween and Teen summer program. This out-of-the-galaxy adventure will take kids to infinity and beyond. Summer programming gives children an educational, fun and safe way to spend summer break. The fun starts on June 26, and runs every Wednesday through August 14, from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.
The Children's Department celebrates each spring with the Tiny Tim Tomato Project, where a local master gardener instructs kids how to care for a tomato plant. During the summer, the Library takes its Annual Pittsburgh Zoo trip - available to the whole community - providing transportation and zoo admission at a reduced cost. The Teddy Bear Picnic is the autumn celebration for children (up to 8 years old) where they can bring their favorite stuffed animal to the library for a picnic, crafts, games and stories. In December, at Fetch's Annual Sleepover and Pajama Party, kids of all ages come for a party and overnight stay with Fetch, the WAGGIN mascot.
Literary services are offered through the Family Literacy Department. These services include basic literacy, PC skills, after-school tutoring, one-on-one subject tutoring, GED test preparation for adults, SAT prep for students and ASVAB preparation for those interested in joining the military. The department also provides assistance learning English as a second language and, a new addition to the online resources, NCLEX-RN and PANCE prep.
The Library participates in the PA Forward Initiative, promoting basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy and financial literacy. These literacies have been identified as the five necessary to become a responsible citizen.
Bowlby is excited to announce that groundbreaking for the newest addition will begin Spring of 2019. The facility is expanding to provide a new multi-media community room that will allow for additional programming as well as provide much needed space for community hosted meeting, services and events. The expansion will also include an adult reference room, which will accommodate the PA collection and offer smaller meeting rooms with a common quiet space area. The Board of Trustees, Executive Director and staff are looking forward to the expansion and the opportunities the space will give the library and the community it serves.
