2nd Sam 9, Inc., (Second Sam Nine), is a nonprofit faith-based day program for adults with intellectual disabilities that is completely free to participants and supported only by donors. The program provides enriching activities in a Christ-centered environment that helps each participant develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, physically, and spiritually. Open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, there is a waiting list of people wanting to attend. 2nd Sam 9 offers social time, prayer, worship, music, Bible lessons, life skills lessons, exercise, games, crafts, and community outings. More than one participant has said, “It’s my favorite day of the week!”
Inspired by their daughter with special needs, Scott & Teresa Roberts founded this incorporation in 2010; then, the board of directors opened the program in 2012, with no funds, little knowledge of nonprofits, and a whole lot of faith. God continues to provide all that has been needed. Individual donors and churches provide a majority of the financial support. Grants from agencies like the GCUW, Women of SWPA, and CFGC, and GCMHF have been a blessing. Currently, donations are needed for their operating expenses and new building renovations. 2nd Sam 9 has outgrown our current building and recently purchased a former church near the Washington Health Systems Greene. The program was founded and is led by a volunteer board, (Barb Barnhart, Debbie Crouse, Bill Sukolsky, Scott & Teresa Roberts, Elaine Williamson, and Carol Young), who employ one part-time program coordinator. Waynesburg University shares many great student volunteers, but they are looking for additional volunteers to help with cleaning, maintenance work, and yard work, so that they can move in quickly. One time or regular volunteer opportunities include: leading a craft, music performance, reading a story, cooking demonstration, being a buddy/helper, and many other ways to get involved. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for upcoming community volunteer work days, or send us an email for more information at [email protected]. Learn more at www.2ndSam9.org. |
