A Brief History
1887: Religious leaders in Denver Colorado founded the Charity Organizations Society, the first “United Way” organization.
1908: First United Way planning group formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
1979: Greene County United Way organized and conducted its first campaign jointly with the United Ways of Allegheny and Washington Counties
1987: Allocations to local agencies reach $100,000 in Greene County. United Way of America Celebrates 100 years of public service
2004: Greene County United Way celebrated 25 years of service to the Greene County area

2017: Greene Cuisine had the most attendance to date, Stuff the Bus celebrated 15th Anniversary
2018: MaChal Forbes was hired as Executive Director. Greene Cuisine and the Golf Tournament had their most successful years to date.
2019: 2019 was the 40th Anniversary of Greene County United Way, which was celebrated at Thistlethwaite’s Vineyard in September. Darla Lemley was hired as Executive Assistant. CASA for Greene County became our 17th Community Partner Agency. Greene Cuisine had 212 attendees and Stuff the Bus gave 663 backpacks to needy children within our community.
2020: During the pandemic due to Covid-19, Greene County United Way partnered with the Community Foundation of Greene County to create the Emergency Response Fund and gave $131,000 in grants to local nonprofits who. United Way also gave 558 backpacks for the 18th Annual Stuff the Bus. We held our first Mystery Road Rally in October (replacing the Golf Tournament) as well as hired Olivia Makel as the new Executive Assistant.
2021: The 19th Annual Stuff the Bus gave backpacks to 514 students, as well as, new shoes, water bottles, and lunch bags. Grants from the Women of Southwestern PA and the Community Foundation of Greene County as well as partnerships with EQT, Operation Warm, and Heart-n-Sole program made all of this possible. 34 volunteers participated in the 1st Annual Day of Service working on five community projects. GCUW hosted two successful events- A Taste of Greene and the Mystery Road Rally.
2022: The 20th Annual Stuff the Bus provided school supplies to 707 children in all five school districts, along with new shoes and socks, haircuts, dental and eye exams, and “new-to-you” clothing with the help of 70+ volunteers. GCUW hosted two successful events – the Food Fight and the Mystery Road Rally.
2023: The 21st Annual Stuff the Bus provided 730 children backpacks, 223 pairs of shoes, 338 outfits, 155 haircuts, 1,344 slices of pizza, and 423 scoops of ice cream with the help of 65 volunteers. For the first time, GCUW offered Inspire Greene, a Community Builder & Leadership Course, a 10-week program to 8 participants. Also, for the first time, GCUW hosted the Truck Giveaway fundraiser, selling $20 raffle tickets to win a brand new 2022 Ford F-150. The fundraiser netted $38,330 in revenue.
