The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies through the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. We shelter, feed and provide comfort after disasters; supply about 40% of the nation’s blood; teach skills that save lives; provide international humanitarian aid; and support military members, veterans and their families. Thanks to donations, all Red Cross services are free and available for all those in need. Visit redcross.org to support our lifesaving work.
Adam Stokes, of Greene County, has been volunteering on the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team for 12 years. In that role, he responds to local disasters such as home fires, floods and storm damage. “I have had the opportunity to help people on some of their hardest days,” Stokes said. “I am humbled by the impact and effect by volunteering my time and effort can have when delivered at the right time, at someone’s greatest time of need!” After a home fire, Red Cross volunteers work with local fire departments to connect with families for needs like emergency lodging, financial assistance and emotional support. A family of three in Waynesburg suffered a home fire and was concerned about how they were going to recover. The Red Cross arrived to help the family, meet their needs and provide hope and comfort in their time of need. The family was thankful the Red Cross responded to the scene of the fire but also kept in contact to help them move forward in their recovery. The American Red Cross is installing free smoke alarms and sharing fire safety information through our Home Fire Campaign. If you cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or are physically unable to install a smoke alarm, the Red Cross may be able to help. Visit SoundTheAlarm.org/GreaterPA for more information. A resident from Brave, PA requested smoke alarms in her home. The Red Cross scheduled a time to come and install the smoke alarms for her. She was very happy with the Red Cross volunteers who came to install the alarms and teach her about home fire safety and help her to create an emergency evacuation plan. She told her neighbors about how important it is to have smoke alarms installed in their homes. |
