Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services are core to our mission of protecting life and helping all in their time of need. They address the immediate financial needs of the families and work to ensure the well-being of all said family members by giving them skills to become stable. The Pregnancy and Parenting Services are provided to women and/or men and their families who have a child under the age of two. These services provide the caregiver parenting a young child with supportive counseling, educational opportunities, and tangible assistance – at no cost to them. Catholic Charities offers counseling, nutrition classes, parenting skills, child development, life skills education, prenatal nutrition, and self-care for the parents. In order to accommodate parents who may have difficulty traveling to the site, some services can be offered in-home. Many of the tangible assistance items distributed to clients are donated with the balance purchased through grants, such as from Greene County United way. Overall, Pregnancy and Parenting Counseling Services include supporting women who are facing a pregnancy crisis.
Recently, Abigail (not her real name due to confidentiality) came to Catholic Charities Greene County Outreach Office seeking help. Her eight month old child was placed in the Foster Care System because of the actions by the baby's father. Abigail was able to leave that relationship but Children and Youth Services Department (CYS) had placed various criteria that she needed to meet before the return of her baby.
Abigail was unemployed and received minimal benefits. She wanted to provide for her baby during her supervised visits to show her love and ability to care for her child. Catholic Charities Greene County Outreach Office, with instrumental assistance from Greene County United Way's generous grant for baby care items, was able to have a supply of diapers and formula, as well as baby clothing, blankets, and other essentials for each and every supervised visit. She also received vital parenting counseling from her Catholic Charities Pregnancy and Parenting staff.
Abigail demonstrated an increased ability to care for her child through increased knowledge and confidence and, of course, the baby care items. The Greene County Court was quite pleased as was CYS. Abigail eventually proved her ability to care for her child and was granted full custody once again! Mother and child are reunited and Abigail continues to attend sessions through Catholic Charities' parenting supportive counseling and receives baby care items.
Abigail is very appreciative of the partnership and efforts of both Catholic Charities Greene County Outreach Office and Greene County United Way!
