The mission of the food bank is to feed hungry people by soliciting and judiciously distributing food and grocery products through a county-wide network of food pantries and agencies and to educate the public about the nature of and solutions to the problems of hunger. Corner Cupboard Food Bank is a non-profit organization, serving low-income families in Greene County. Our organization provides food security through a number of feeding programs, including our Pantry Distribution Program (CCFB oversees and supplies food product to 11 food pantry sites throughout the county, categorized by township, which distributes monthly boxes to households in need), Kids Bags Program, and Youth Café Market. Our facility is located on Rolling Meadows Road in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Anyone interested in assisting or in need of assistance may call 724-627-9784, during normal business hours, or e-mail [email protected] for more information.
Longtime Bobtown resident, Dale Richter, has been a volunteer for our organization for over ten years and is a lead volunteer at our Dunkard Township food pantry. Dale always goes above and beyond, often delivering food boxes to clients registered at his pantry who are not able to attend. He always has a smile on his face and does not know a stranger. When asked what motivates him to volunteer for Corner Cupboard, he responded, “It gets me out of babysitting! Just kidding! I enjoy helping people and my grandkids help out too! It’s a good experience for them.” In the summer of 2023, we started a new program called the Youth Café Market. Several days a week we set up a farmers’ market-style stand at various locations in Greene, offering free produce to children, ages 18 and under. Through this program we are able to offer fresh fruits and vegetables to the youth in our area, encouraging healthier eating habits, educating on nutrition and encouraging self-sustainability. Children are able to shop (free of charge) at the market for themselves and their families. We loved hearing stories from families who used produce from the market to make meals and memories together. One family gifted us some homemade salsa that they had prepared. Another special moment was a young fellow who, when discussing gardening and looking through packets of vegetable seeds that we were sharing, couldn’t wait to show us the hot peppers he had grown. We are excited to continue our Youth Café Market in the 2024 growing season! With a staff of four, volunteers are invaluable to our organization’s mission. All of our food pantries are managed by volunteers, with one person being assigned by Corner Cupboard to be the leader. Many of these leaders or coordinators have been volunteering at their respective pantries for decades and many are elderly. Corner Cupboard is on the lookout for responsible, consistent, and enthusiastic individuals to assist at our pantry sites. While we wish that we could have our current volunteers forever, we know that this is not realistic, and that we should be prepared for changes. Interested persons are asked to contact Candace or Jessica at 724-627-9784, for more information. |
