Corner Cupboard Food Bank was established October 19, 1992. The mission of the food bank is to feed hungry people by soliciting and judiciously distributing food and grocery products through a county-wide network of food pantries and agencies, and to educate the public about the nature of and solutions to the problems of hunger. Corner Cupboard has 11 pantries sites throughout the county to distribute a monthly food box to households who are in need of food security and who meet the income guidelines through The Emergency Food and Assistance Program or TEFAP. We also participate in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) that provides an additional box of food to area senior citizens who fall within the income guidelines.
We accomplish this with 3 full-time employees, 9 board members, and 150+ pantry volunteers. We provide food boxes to over 2,500 individuals in Greene County. All monetary donations and food collected through food drives and daily are distributed with our monthly allocations to the pantry sites. For more information on the operations and programs of Corner Cupboard Food Bank, volunteer opportunities, giving or receiving assistance please visit our website at www.cornercupboard.org, call 724-627-9784, or e-mail director@ccfb.comcastbiz.net In addition to the monthly pantry box and senior box programs, Corner Cupboard and its agency pantries offer one-time-only emergency food boxes to clients in urgent need and also provide special food bags, prepared for children ages 3 to 17 years. These nutritionally sound “Kid’s Bags” are distributed during the summer months, when school is out, and for the Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The bags are included in the monthly food boxes for households with children. We currently serve nearly 500 seniors per month and over 600 children. The Greene County United Way has played a major role in assisting with funding for our programs, specifically our Kid’s Bags Program. The Food Bank relies on a diverse range of individuals and volunteer groups. We are happy to work with your skills and abilities to find your perfect fit with us. Our volunteers include individuals, families, senior citizens, corporate groups, religious groups, school groups, and many others who help us help our neighbors in need. The minimum age to volunteer is 12 years old (with supervision of a parent or guardian). Any minor under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteer opportunities include sorting donations, packing pantry orders, cleaning, clerical tasks, among others. When asked to tell me a success story, Corner Cupboard Executive Director, Candace Webster, said, "It depends on your definition of success. In our line of work, success is not quantified by a name or a number. Our success is defined by the continuance of service to our community members in need. There will always be a need and we will never cease in our efforts to provide food security to our neighbors." |
