Eva K. Bowlby Public Library
The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library is located in the heart of Waynesburg, housed in a beautiful mansion that was bequeathed to the community to house the Children's Library of Waynesburg. Service expanded in 1967 to include an adult collection and the name was changed to that of its benefactress Eva K. Bowlby.
In 2020 the Bowlby Library continues to be a focal point for the community. County residents, university and college students may apply for a FREE library card which gives patron access to over 62,000 items in our collection! The three county WAGGIN card gives access to the collections of 19 other libraries as well as OverDrive, an online collection of eBooks and several databases. The library offers access to a bank of computers for email, research, and a variety of other options as well as Wi-Fi access for the patrons using their own devices. This year we have also expanded our printing services. Patrons are now able to send their documents from their computers or mobile devices through email to be printed at the library and picked up.
The Children's Department is a bustling department offering story hours in the spring, summer, and fall months, as well as a lively summer reading program. The 2020 summer theme was "Imagine Your Story" and was offered to children ages 2 - 13 years of age as well as a Tween and Teen Summer Program. The Children's Department celebrates every fall with special classes celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Let’s not forget about the annual Fetch’s Sleepover & Pajama Party in December when children of all ages bring their favorite stuffed animal for a party and sleepover with Fetch, the WAGGIN mascot. This program is being offered at the Eva K Bowlby Public Library Open House on December 2nd 3:30-6:30. These are just a few of the services offered in Youth Services.
Literacy services are offered through the Family Literacy Department. This includes basic literacy, PC skills, after school tutoring, subject tutoring [one-on-one instruction], GED test preparation for adults, SAT preparation for high school students, ASVAB preparation for those interested in joining the military. The department also offers assistance learning English as a second language, and a new addition to our online resources is NCLEX-RN & PANCE preparation.
The Bowlby Library participates in the PA Forward initiative, promoting Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic & Social Literacy, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy. These literacies have been identified as the five literacies necessary to become a responsible citizen.
